Description
A delightful rhythm and rhyme story that follows four Australian baby animals who spend their day frolicking, dancing, playing and singing together.
Baby hears, baby beat.
Baby steps, baby feet.
Baby nods, baby grins.
Baby claps, baby spins.
Its soothing beat and sleepy conclusion make it a perfect bedtime book choice. But at the same time, the actions and movements on every page (clapping, rolling, bopping) provide inspiration for kids to get up and move along with the baby animals.
Author – Katrina Germein
Katrina Germein began writing books by accident when a story in her head wouldn’t go away. She wrote it down to set it free. This story went on to become Katrina’s first picture book Big Rain Coming. Katrina has continued to write books for children ever since, including the highly popular My Dad Thinks He’s Funny. Her stories have won notable book commendations from the Children’s Book Council of Australia and her book Big Rain Coming has been published around the world, remaining in print over a decade after its release.
Katrina holds a master’s degree in Early Childhood Education. She has three children and works part-time as an early childhood teacher. When she’s not writing, teaching or parenting Katrina enjoys reading fiction, napping in the sun and drinking hot cups of tea. She also quite likes bush walking, running and going to the beach. Katrina has an energetic dog named Mango and would really like to own a cat. Summer is Katrina’s favourite season.
Illustrator – Doris Chang
Doris Chang is an Adelaide-based Illustrator, Designer, Writer and Letterer with a Bachelor of Design in Visual Communication. Working by hand in watercolour and ink, she has a penchant for whimsical animal characters, hand-generated type, wordplay and visual pun. Baby Dance is Doris’ first published work.
What I love about working in water colour is its organic nature. The materials speak for themselves and are beautiful on their own; it’s not about painstakingly rendering an image to perfection, but manipulating the natural characteristics of the material in front of you. When I illustrate it’s less like painting and more like pushing and pulling pigment around – a successful piece of work is usually an unlikely combination of careful planning, spontaneity and fast reflexes. Its soothing beat and sleepy conclusion make it a perfect bedtime book choice. But at the same time, the actions and movements on every page (clapping, rolling, bopping) provide inspiration for kids to get up and move along with the baby animals.
The soft, curvy illustrations by Doris Chang are just adorable, with earthy pastel browns, yellows and greys. Lots of white space lets the characters shine as they spin and groove across the pages, and the cheeky cockatoo is sure to give you a giggle.
Baby Dance is a beautiful and versatile board book. It will appeal to little ears ready for bed as well as little bodies ready to shake and move.
