Submission Process

We are very happy to receive submissions from emerging and established authors who are Australian residents.

Please read the submission guidelines carefully and include the following with your submission:

  • a synopsis and word count;
  • a brief biography, including any previous publishing history, writing experience or awards;
  • a brief cover letter stating your intended audience
  • please tell us if your work is out on submission with agents or other publishers.
  • if you have a literary agent, their name and email address.

What happens after you have submitted a manuscript?

We will email an acknowledgement to you and your manuscript will be read and considered by the team. If you have not heard from us within four weeks of acknowledgment of your submission, then we have decided not to pursue your manuscript further. Due to the volume of submissions we receive, it is not possible for us to discuss your submission by phone or by email and we are not able to provide feedback on unsuccessful submissions or explain why we have reached this decision.

Please do not be disheartened. It takes time, a lot of writing and rejections; you are not alone even the best writers have suffered rejection, unfortunately it comes with the territory.  If you have time, read Janeen Brian’s article. She explains beautifully her determination to succeed as a writer and her years of rejection.

There are a number of organisations that help writers improve their writing skills, assess their work and provide professional development opportunities.

The Australian Writer’s Marketplace is the most comprehensive guide to writing and publishing networks, opportunities and markets. With regular industry forums and weekly writing races, The Australian Writer’s Marketplace provides access to writing competitions, manuscript appraisers and templates, articles on current issues, and hints and tips from published authors.

Each state and territory has a writers’ centre that provides creative writing courses and events, industry seminars and advice, as well as services to gain developmental feedback on your work.
